From Trash to Treasure: A Ranchi Teacher's Roadside Oasis

A Curator

In the Harmu housing colony of Ranchi, a small patch of land once notorious for garbage has blossomed into a vibrant garden, all thanks to the vision and perseverance of a local teacher, Manoj Ranjan. Faced with limited space in his city home, Manoj transformed a neglected roadside spot into a lush, green sanctuary.

His love for gardening was nurtured in his village childhood, where he planted trees with his father. "When I moved to Ranchi for my job, I missed having the space to plant," Manoj explains. "I noticed people consistently threw garbage right outside our house. That’s when I decided to turn that very spot into a garden. Now, it’s become a popular place where people stop to take selfies."

The journey wasn’t without its challenges. "In the beginning, whenever I planted new saplings, they would either be stolen or plucked out," he recalls. Unwilling to give up, he devised a clever solution: planting in recycled and unconventional containers like old tires, discarded oil cans, and even helmets, making them less appealing to thieves.

Today, the compact 10-by-4-foot space is a testament to his dedication, flourishing with over 200 different plant varieties. Since the area is shaded by a large tree, he strategically selected seasonal flowers and ornamental plants that require minimal sunlight. He also deliberately avoided species typically used for religious rituals to discourage people from plucking them.

This green transformation has been a family affair. Manoj’s two daughters, Ananya and Manisha Dubey, actively participate in maintaining and beautifying the garden with decorated bricks and creatively painted pots. Their collective effort has created a ripple effect, inspiring neighbors to start their own roadside gardens.

What began as one man’s personal project has become a cherished community highlight. Manoj Ranjan’s garden is a powerful example of how passion and ingenuity can reclaim urban spaces, proving that anyone can contribute to making their city more beautiful, no matter how little space they have.
